About the South American Rattlesnake

The most widespread rattlesnake in South America, found in dry, open habitats but absent from dense rainforest. Its venom contains crotoxin, a powerful neurotoxin that can cause paralysis, along with toxins that damage muscle and kidneys. Bites carry a high fatality rate without antivenom. Raised ridges along its neck give it a distinctive profile. Also called the cascabel.
