Cottonmouth

About the Cottonmouth

Named for their bright white mouth, displayed as a threat. Also called water moccasins. The only semi-aquatic pit viper. Often confused with harmless water snakes. When swimming, their body rides on the water surface (harmless snakes swim with only their head above water). Despite their aggressive reputation, they usually try to escape first. Can bite underwater.
