About the Water Snake (Northern)
The most common water snake in eastern North America. Often mistaken for the venomous cottonmouth and killed unnecessarily. They flatten their head when threatened, making them look like a pit viper. Excellent swimmers that hunt fish and frogs underwater. Give birth to live young. Their bands darken with age, making older individuals appear almost solid brown.
