About the Mangrove Snake
A large, glossy black snake with narrow yellow bands, also called the gold-ringed cat snake. Rear-fanged and mildly venomous; bites cause pain and swelling but are not considered dangerous to people. It is mainly nocturnal and arboreal, resting in trees by day near mangroves and rivers. When threatened it gapes widely to show a black mouth. Sometimes kept as an exotic pet.
