About the Gopher Snake
A large, harmless constrictor found from southern Canada to Mexico. When threatened it imitates a rattlesnake, hissing loudly, flattening its head, and vibrating its tail in dry leaves. Its subspecies the bullsnake is among the largest snakes in North America. It is a valuable controller of rodents on farms. Often killed by people who mistake it for a rattlesnake.
