About the Rat Snake (Eastern)
One of the longest snakes in North America, reaching 2.5 meters. Excellent climbers that can scale brick walls and trees with ease. Their keeled scales provide traction. Major pest controllers — a single rat snake can eat 100+ mice per year. When threatened, they vibrate their tail and produce a foul-smelling musk. Juveniles have a blotched pattern that fades to solid black with age.
