About the Garter Snake (Common)
The most common snake in North America. One of the few snakes that can be active in cold weather — they have been found slithering on snow. Females give birth to up to 80 live young. Some populations have developed resistance to the toxins in rough-skinned newts. They hibernate in massive communal dens of thousands. Their name comes from their striped pattern resembling garters.
